True Story of Edges: Leimert Park, 2023
Jessica Wimbley
Video Collage, 1:55 Minutes
The True Story of Edges: Leimert Park presents hair as a mutable space of memory and storytelling. Playing on the African American vernacular for the fine hairs along the hairline, the artwork features the artist with a video collage within her afro that mixes contemporary images with home videos from the Prelinger Archive featuring families from Baldwin Hills, Leimert Park, Watts and South Central Los Angeles. Imagery is collaged throughout the hair of the figure, generating multiple and simultaneous narratives of the people who have lived within the surrounding communities.
