Breaking Illusions: Artist as Scientist is curated by Conchi Sanford, curator, visual artist and Professor of Art History and Fine Art. Conchi has curated multiple exhibits extending across Northern and Southern California, in addition to International exhibitions; bringing together multiple emerging and well-established artists under a cohesive theme. The arts and sciences are two great engines of culture, sources of creativity, places of aspiration, and markers of aggregate identity. This show is intended to unmask the information amassed by the artist. The artist considering the information as if looking at it through a microscope, removing obvious information and providing a dissected reality which begins with the artist as scientist, resides in the art and ends in the viewers; coming full circle back to the one element that sews it all together, mankind. The following artists not only create aesthetically appealing pieces, but also use their artistic ability to dissect, layer, remove, include theorize and hypothesize; multiples times throughout the entire art process. Join the Art Department at Claremont Graduate University and Conchi Sanford in welcoming Alice Marie Perreault, Annie Clavel, Betsy Lohrer Hall, Clara Berta, Dianna Lindquist, Eric Johnson, Emery C. Martin, Jessica Wimbley, Kimiko Miyoshi, Melissa Walter, Patrick Faulk, Randi Hokett, and Virginia Katz. We invite you to experience a scientific approach to art.
